Honorable Martha E. Bellinger
The Honorable Martha E. Bellinger (1949–2026) was a pioneering Los Angeles Superior Court judge, ordained minister, and law professor who dedicated over two decades to California’s legal system. Appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2005, she made legal history as the court’s first openly lesbian jurist appointed by a Republican governor, specializing deeply in juvenile law. Prior to her historic judicial career, she served as a Los Angeles County prosecutor and a United Methodist parish pastor. Following her retirement from the bench in 2011, she continued to impact the community as a civil mediator and an adjunct professor at the University of La Verne College of Law.
