Gayles and Yandle: Historic Confirmations to the Federal Bench

The United States Senate confirmed President Barack M. Obama’s appointment of Florida Judge Darrin P. Gayles (Eleventh Judicial Circuit) and Illinois Attorney Staci Michelle Yandle to the Federal Bench on Tuesday, June 17, 2014.

As reported by the Huffington Post, Gayles will be the first openly LGBT African American male to serve on the Federal Bench, and Yandle will only be the second openly LGBT African American female to serve on the Federal Bench, joining Judge Deborah A. Batts. Judge Batts has been a member of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York since 1994, following confirmation of her appointment by former President Bill Clinton.

Gayles will join the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Yandle will join the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
