Honorable Barbara A. Lenk

The Honorable Barbara A. Lenk was a pioneering American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 2011 until her mandatory retirement in 2020. Appointed by Governor Deval Patrick, she made history as the first openly gay justice to serve on the state’s highest court. Over a distinguished 27-year judicial career that also included appointments to the Superior Court and Appeals Court, she was highly regarded for her rigorous legal reasoning, dedication to fairness, and elegant written opinions. She held a Ph.D. in political philosophy from Yale University and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
